The Tea Party movement is an American fiscally conservative political movement within the Republican Party. Members of the movement have called for lower taxes , and for a reduction of the national debt of the United States and federal budget deficit through decreased government spending. The Tea Party movement was launched following a February 19, call by CNBC reporter Rick Santelli on the floor of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange for a "tea party," several conservative activists agreed by conference call to coalesce against Obama's agenda and scheduled series of protests. Although the Tea Party is not a party in the classic sense of the word, some research suggests that members of the Tea Party Caucus vote like a significantly farther right third party in Congress. The movement's name refers to the Boston Tea Party of December 16, , a watershed event in the launch of the American Revolution. The event demonstrated against taxation by the British government without political representation for the American colonists, and references to the Boston Tea Party and even costumes from the s era are commonly heard and seen in the Tea Party movement. The Tea Party movement focuses on a significant reduction in the size and scope of the government. The Tea Party does not have a single uniform agenda.
The RICO Act focuses specifically on racketeering and allows the leaders of a syndicate to be tried for the crimes they ordered others to do or assisted them in doing , closing a perceived loophole that allowed a person who instructed someone else to, for example, murder, to be exempt from the trial because they did not actually commit the crime personally. While its original use in the s was to prosecute the Mafia as well as others who were actively engaged in organized crime, its later application has been more widespread. Under RICO, a person who has committed "at least two acts of racketeering activity" drawn from a list of 35 crimes—27 federal crimes and 8 state crimes —within a year period can be charged with racketeering if such acts are related in one of four specified ways to an "enterprise". When the U. Attorney decides to indict someone under RICO, they have the option of seeking a pre-trial restraining order or injunction to temporarily seize a defendant's assets and prevent the transfer of potentially forfeitable property, as well as require the defendant to put up a performance bond. This provision was placed in the law because the owners of Mafia -related shell corporations often absconded with the assets.
